It's happened to many drivers, and could one day happen to you: a thudding noise and erratic movements begin to interrupt your peaceful drive. Sure enough, you discover you have a flat tire. Now what? Our Lima OH Hyundai service center doesn't want you to get stuck, so here are the steps you need to change your flat tire.

How to Change a Flat Tire

**NOTE: Please be sure you're in a safe place to do this before changing the tire. That means a flat, stable surface well out of the way of traffic.

Items required:

  1. Spare tire
  2. Tire iron
  3. Car jack

  1. Once your vehicle is stopped, take any safety measures you can. That means activating the parking brake, putting your hazards on, and, if you have them, setting up a reflective triangle and a flare to optimize visibility.
  2. Locate and remove your spare tire, jack, and tire iron. The location varies on different vehicles, and if you're unsure, check your owner's manual.
  3. Use the tire iron or flathead screwdriver to remove the hubcap from the wheel (this will require prying.)
  4. Loosen the wheel's lug nuts by turning them counter-clockwise with the tire iron. Do not remove them yet.
  5. Raise the vehicle with the jack where the flat tire is located. Please note that vehicles have specific jack points, so check your owner's manual to find your vehicle's, if you're not sure already.
  6. Remove the lug nuts and flat tire, setting them aside for now.
  7. Line up the lug nut holes on the spare tire with the studs.
  8. Install the lug nuts and make sure they're tight using the tire iron.
  9. Carefully lower your vehicle back down and remove the jack.
  10. For the last time, tighten the lug nuts evenly, using a crisscross pattern. Double check to make sure they're tight.
  11. If need be, reinstall the hub cap.
  12. Put everything away (putting the flat tire where the spare tire used to be) and hit the road!
